Diabetic Marie Henken lost 25 pounds through smart eating and exercising.

My turning point: Last winter, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and had to lose weight. I consulted a nutritionist, who told me to eat 1,200 to 1,500 calories a day.

My slim-down techniques: I watch my portion sizes and eat carefully. A typical day’s meal plan: For breakfast, I have a cup of cereal with skim milk, fruit and a cup of coffee with low-fat creamer. For lunch, I eat a turkey sandwich on whole wheat, a small salad and a piece of fruit. My afternoon snack is a yogurt smoothie or a piece of fruit. Dinner is a broiled chicken breast, part of a baked potato and lots of vegetables, like cauliflower, broccoli, zucchini and squash.

My exercise routine: I walk for 45 minutes three or four times a week.

Kept the weight off: One year

My best motivator: I want to be healthy and live a good life for as long as I can. My husband and my friends are also very encouraging.

My greatest temptations: I love chocolate, peanut butter and ice cream.

My favorite diet food: Low-fat, no-sugar-added ice cream. Blue Bell’s no-sugar-added Banana Split is delicious!

My snacking tip: If you’re going to eat a snack, read the nutrition label first to be sure it’s okay!

Slim-down advice: Think of your family members when you’re dieting — and remember that you want to be around to see them for as long as possible.

The payoff: I used to be sluggish, but not anymore. I have more energy and feel better — plus, my clothes look great on me!
