A father’s near-tragedy involving his young daughter inspired him to slim down and lose 11 stone. Phil Hayes, 40, from Watford, Hertfordshire, was 26 stone when 18-month-old Katherine strolled towards a fast-spinning roundabout at a park.
“I went to run after her and found I couldn’t catch her - I was too big and slow,” Mr Hayes said.
Luckily there was no accident but he vowed to lose weight. He has now been named Slimming World’s Man of the Year.
Mr Hayes, a plumber, also had to turn down jobs if it meant squeezing into small spaces and his health suffered because of his weight.
Mr Hayes, who now weighs 15st 2lbs, will receive his award at The Ritz Hotel in London on Wednesday.
