Name: Heather Brown
Home: Mechanicsville, MD
Age: 35
Height: 5'7"
Job: Registered nurse
Weight before: 205
Weight after: 130
The Gain: Even though a nurse should know better, Brown ate for two during her first pregnancy — and gained 55 pounds. "I was so happy and excited about my baby that I didn't use common sense when it came to eating right," she says. When son Nate was just 7 months old, Brown got pregnant again. After her daughter, Elizabeth, was born, Brown's weight settled at 205.
The Change: A year later, Brown was sick of always feeling exhausted. "I was on my feet all day at work, and by the time I got home I had no energy for my children." Realizing that her excess pounds were to blame, she left the kids with her parents one night and went to a Weight Watchers meeting.
The Life: "I learned the basics for healthy weight loss," she says. "Portion control — something I'd never thought about before. Eating healthier foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. And eating when I was hungry, instead of out of habit." Brown used a food scale to keep tabs on her portions and began eating five small meals rather than three large ones to steady her energy level throughout the day. "It wasn't that big of an adjustment," she says. "With two young kids, I didn't have the luxury to sit down and eat a large meal anyway." She carried a cooler of healthy meals to work and avoided the fat traps in the hospital cafeteria. A month later, she was 12 pounds lighter and more energetic: "I wasn't collapsing into bed at the end of the day," she says. And she became even more determined to take the rest of the weight off. So she began walking on the treadmill and doing a light strength-training routine at a local gym that offered child care. As she continued to lose weight and build stamina, she added spinning classes and elliptical training. "I started losing 2 to 3 pounds a week and felt amazing." After 11 months, Brown hit 130 — 20 pounds lower than her pre-pregnancy weight.
The Reward: "Reaching my weight-loss goal has taught me that I can accomplish anything I set my mind and body to. Nothing is impossible."
Heather's Tips
Experiment in the kitchen. "When I started losing weight, I pored over Weight Watchers cookbooks and swapped recipes with other members. Healthy food can really be delicious."
Be prepared. "Keep nutritious snacks on hand at all times so you don't feel tempted to eat junk food. Look for ones that are high in fiber — they'll help you stay full longer."
Don't beat yourself up. "If you get off track one day, let it go and start again the next day." source: womenshealthmag.com

Posted by Rita, 03 July, 2008 19:46:28Heather, you look amazing and your story was is so inspiring. I am 45 years old and a low carb junkie. But now I've decided to do a low fat diet which I started 4 days ago. I started at 190 and I am already down to 187 and have every intention to keep going this time. I know the weight loss will slow, but I actually love watching people watch me eat healthfully... so I dont really feel that deprived like I usually do. Basically for me overeating is a habit, nothing more, nothing less. I was not heavy as a child, teenager or young adult. I only gained 23 pounds when I had my son and I have no appetite when I'm upset, so overeating for me is just a habit. I will make it this time. Thank you again for your encouraging story. Congratulations.

Posted by Melissa, 11 March, 2008 14:31:45Heather, You look amazing! Your story is inspiring to me, because I'm starting from a very similar weight and have the same goal, 75 lbs to lose. So far, I am down 11 pounds in just over a month. I'm a working (full-time), single mom of three toddlers, so I know what it's like to be exhausted at the end of the day with no time to exercise. But I've started using my lunch break at work to spend 45 minutes on the treadmill at the YMCA and have cut out soda and most sweets. You're an inspiration - I am going to keep your "after" photo in my mind to motivate me during my jobs. I want a body as banging as that. Thanks!
