She lost 105 lbs. It took her 18 months
For Gabrielle Goldsby, an executive assistant from Portland, Ore., the worst thing about being overweight was feeling invisible. “That’s what hurt me the most,” she says. “Guys would not hold the door for me. I think people do not see you when you are large.”

A former college shot-put thrower, Goldsby, 5’6”, had gradually packed on the weight entertaining business clients in her former job and eating fast food three or four times a week. Two years ago, at only 31, she could barely make it up the 20 stairs from her laundry room without becoming dizzy.

Worried that she might be suffering from diabetes, she began to research the disease—and dieting—on the Internet. Her search led her to the Atkins Diet Web site. “Most people pretty much focus on the fact that with Atkins, one supposedly eats meats and fats and cheese, and that is simply not true.” Eating lots of vegetables in addition to chicken and turkey, Goldsby lost 13 lbs. in the first two weeks. Next, she learned how to make low-carb casseroles and how to bake and grill fish, and substituted turnips for potatoes.

To stay motivated, she went shopping. “I would buy pants or jeans a size smaller and keep trying them on until I could get into them,” she remembers. “That’s how I rewarded myself; that was my incentive to keep losing.” As pleased as she is with her progress, Goldsby would like to lose 10 more lbs. “In my mind, I don’t think I’m there yet,” she says. “But it just feels fantastic to be healthy.”

How She Did It: The Atkins Diet
To complement her low-carb Atkins meal plan, she began to exercise but didn’t join a gym. “I started out trying to walk 3,000 steps a day. I got a pedometer and pretty soon I was up to 5,000 and then 10,000.”
